On your rights
www.adviceguide.org.uk
Your Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) can help you if you are not sure what your rights are. This website has lots of useful information. It also has details of local CAB offices.

On services for pensioners
Your local council will usually have services for people who have retired. You may have to contact more than one department. The social services department is a good starting point - they often deal with services that are most relevant to older pensioners, such as residential homes, daycentres and home help.

Depending on the size of the council, it may have a team that gives advice on finances. Some councils also have a 'care and repair' service that can help if your home needs work done on it.

On making a will
Making a will is one of the most important things you can do. It allows you to say what you want done with your money and belongings when you die. You can use it to appoint a guardian for your children.

Age UK's website has information on making a will. You can get simple will-writing forms from most newsagents. You can even write a will out yourself. You need to say:

  • who you are;
  • who your executors (the people who will carry out your instructions) are; and
  • how you want your money and belongings shared out.

    As long as the will is witnessed by two independent people, it is a legal document. However unless your will is very simple, it is advisable to get legal advice. Your Citizen's Advice Bureau will usually have a list of local solicitors who offer this service.
